David Nicolle, Londra Üniversitesi SOAS'ta yüksek lisansını almadan önce için çalıştı. 1982 yılında Edinburgh Üniversitesi'nde doktora derecesi aldı. Doktorasının başlığı The Military Technology of Classical Islam'dir.Ürdün 'nde Dünya ve İslam sanatı ve İslam mimarisi dersleri verdi. Aynı zamanda Medieval History Magazine'in yayın kurulunda yer aldı.
Nicolle, 1976'da Amerikan Colette Giroux ile evlendi; bu evlilikten Frederick Joseph ("Fred", d. 1982) ve Dr. Antoinette Laura ("Nette", d. 1984) adında bir oğlu ve bir kızı oldu. Günümüzde Chipping Barnet, Londra'da yaşamakta ve çalışmaktadır.
