Bu bakteri türü 1964 yılında D. H. Roberts tarafından bildirilmiş olup 1980 yılında yayımlanmış bir çalışmada bu bakterinin varlığı onaylanmıştır. Mycoplasma anatis enfeksiyonunun ördeklerde sinir sistemi bulgularıyla ilişkisinin bulunduğu bildirilmiştir.M. anatis, ördek ve kazlardan yalıtılmıştır.
M. anatis'in genom dizilemesi 2018 yılında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Tip suşu ATCC 25524 = IFO 14861 = NBRC 14861 = NCTC 10156 = 1340'tır.
