Takma adı "Lady Day" olan Billie Holiday, gezgin bir müzisyen babanın kızıdır. Aynı süreçte Aretha Franklin, Leonard Cohen gibi isimleri ünlü yapan organizatör tarafından keşfedildi. Blues türünü kendisine yaşam tarzı edinen ve mesleğinde kısa sürede başarı elde eden Holiday, caz tarihinin en önemli seslerinden biri oldu. Şarkı sözü yazarlığı ve beste yaptı. Bir dönem uyuşturucu kullandı. Birçok caz ve blues şarkıcısına ilham kaynağı oldu. Summertime gibi bazı yorumları klasikler arasına girdi. Sanatçı, 44 yaşındayken siroz nedeniyle hayatını kaybetti.
