David Cross, 4 Nisan 1964 yılında Roswell, Georgia'da Yahudi bir ailenin oğlu olarak dünyaya geldi.
En çok Bob Odenkirk ile birlikte yaratıcılığını ve oyunculuğunu üstlendiği Mr. Show ve ayrıca Arrested Development dizisindeki Tobias Fünke rolüyle tanınmaktadır.
Genç yaşta stand-up komedileri yaptıktan sonra profesyonel kariyerine 1992 senesinde yayınlanmaya başlayan için yazarlık yaparak başlayan Cross, şovun diğer bir yazarı ve aynı zamanda dört ana oyuncusundan biri olan Bob Odenkirk ile tanıştı ve ikili 1995'te Emmy ödüllü Mr. Show'u yarattı.
Daha sonra, aslında küçük bir rol olarak planlanan ama ana karakter haline gelen Tobias Fünke rolüyle dört sene boyunca Arrested Development dizisinde oynadı.
Cross'un rol aldığı projeler arasında Tenacious D, Men in Black, Scary Movie 2, Run Ronnie Run, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kung Fu Panda ve Megamind yer alıyor. Günümüzde Running Wilde dizisinde Andy Weeks karakterini canlandırmaktadır.
