Özellikleri

Uzun ve yılan balığı şeklinde vücuda sahiptir. Pulsuz, tüysüz ve pürüzsüzdür. Yaklaşık 80-130 cm (31-51 in) uzunluğunda olsa da 1,5 metre (4 ft 11 in) uzunluğunda yakalanan örneği vardır.. Bilinen en ağırı 6,5 kg (14 lb), en yaşlısı ise 38 yaşındadır. Ortalama ömrü 12-15'dir.

Yaygın bilinenin aksine ısırığı zehirli değildir. Ancak zararsız da değildir. Mukusu veya tükürüğü ikincil enfeksiyonlara sebep olabilir. Tükürüğünde Pseudomonas ve Vibrio cinsi bakteriler bulunur. Isırık tedavisinin yanı sıra bu bakteri türlerine yönelik tedavilerin uygulanması da yararlı olabilir.
