Stephen Glenn Martin, 14 Ağustos 1945 yılında Waco, Teksas'ta Alman, Fransız, İngiliz ve İskoç kökenli bir ailenin oğlu olarak dünyaya geldi ve Kaliforniya'da büyüdü. 1967 yılında kız arkadaşının görev aldığı The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour dizisi için yazarlık yaptı. 1970'li yılların sonlarında komedyenlik yeteneğinin tescillenmesiyle sinema dünyasına adım attı. 1977 yılında ilk filmi The Absent-Minded Waiter çekildi. 7 dakika uzunluğunda olan ve senaryosu Martin'e ait olan bu film en iyi kısa film dalında Akademi Ödülleri'ne aday gösterildi. 1979 yılında ilk uzun metrajlı filmi The Jerk yayınlandı.
