Bulutsular ve Yıldız Kümeleri Kataloğu (Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, kısaca CN), ilk olarak 1786 yılında William Herschel tarafından, kız kardeşi Caroline Herschel'in yardımıyla yayımlanan bulutsular astronomi kataloğudur. Daha sonra oğlu John Herschel tarafından 1864 yılında Bulutsular ve Yıldız Kümeleri Genel Kataloğu (General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, kısaca GC) olarak genişletilmiştir. CN ve GC, John Louis Emil Dreyer'in 1888 yılında derlediği ve günümüz astronomları tarafından kullanılan Yeni Genel Katalog'un (NGC) öncülleridir.
Tarihçe
Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars, ilk olarak 1786 yılında William Herschel tarafından Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London'da yayımlanmıştır. 1789 yılında 1.000, 1802 yılında ise 500 giriş daha ekleyerek toplam giriş sayısını 2.500'e çıkarmıştır. Bu katalog, tanımlayıcı olarak harfler ve katalog numaralarının kullanımını başlatmıştır. Büyük "H" harfi ve ardından gelen katalog giriş numarası, öğeyi temsil ediyordu.
1864 yılında CN, William'ın oğlu John Herschel tarafından General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (GC) olarak genişletildi. GC, 5.079 giriş içeriyordu. Daha sonra kataloğun tamamlayıcı bir baskısı, ölümünden sonra General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars ("10.300 Çoklu ve Çift Yıldızlar Genel Kataloğu") olarak yayımlandı. Küçük "h" harfi ve ardından gelen katalog giriş numarası, öğeyi temsil ediyordu.
1878 yılında John Louis Emil Dreyer, Genel Kataloğa (General Catalogue) bir ek yayımladı. 1886 yılında Genel Kataloğa ikinci bir ek yapılmasını önerdi, fakat Dreyer'dan bunun yerine yeni bir versiyon derlemesini istedi. Bu durum, 1888 yılında Yeni Genel Katalog'un (New General Catalogue, NGC) ve 1895 ile 1908 yıllarında iki genişlemesi olan Dizin Katalogları'nın (Index Catalogues, IC) yayımlanmasına yol açtı.
