1988'de Kazakistanın Almatı kentinde doğdu. Ermeni, Slav ve Asya kökenlidir. Elbakyan Astana Üniversitesindeki çalışmalarında becerilerini geliştirdi. Moskova'da bilgisayar güvenliği alanında bir yıl çalıştı, 2010 yılında beyin-bilgisayar arayüzü projesinde çalışması adına Freiburg'a geçmesi için para aldı ve Transhümanizm konusunda geliştirmelerde bulundu, yaz stajında Georgia Teknoloji Enstitüsü'nde "Sinir Bilimleri ve Bilinç" konusunda çalıştı.Bilgi güvenliği konusunda uzmanlaşarak 2009 yılında Kazak Ulusal Teknoloji Üniversitesi'nden bilgisayar bilimi alanında Bachelor of Science unvanını aldı.

2011'de Kazakistan'a döndü ve kimine göre fedakarlık, kimine göre ise büyük bir suç olarak nitelendirilen Sci-Hub'a başladı.
