James Mooney (1861 - 1921), İrlanda kökenli Amerikalı etnograf, halkbilimci ve antropolog. Birkaç yıl Çerokiler arasında yaşamıştır. Güneydoğu Kızılderilileri ve Ova Kızılderilileri üzerine etnografik çalışmalarıyla tanınmıştır. En önemli etnoğrafik çalışması Oturan Boğa'nın 1890'da ölümünden sonra Hayalet Dansı üzerine yapmış olduğu çalışmadır ve 1885 yılında çalışmaya başladığı kurumu tarafından yayımlanmıştır. Kızılderililerin 3.000 kabile adını derlemiştir. Wounded Knee Katliamı'ndan sonra görevi sona ermiştir. Mooney, ABD Kızılderilileri üzerine uzman olarak kabul edilir.
