O'Malley, 1927'de Tiltonsville, Ohio'da doğdu. 18 yaşında İsa Cemiyeti'ne katıldı ve daha sonra Harvard Üniversitesi'nden tarih alanında doktora derecesi aldı.
Kariyer
Georgetown Üniversitesi'nde "üniversite profesörü" olmadan önce, 1965'ten itibaren 'nde ve 1979'dan itibaren Cambridge, Massachusetts'teki Weston Jesuits İlahiyat Okulu'nda öğretim üyesiydi.
O'Malley'nin en bilinen eserleri arasında 12 dile çevrilen "The First Jesuits" (Harvard University Press, 1993) ve "What Happened at Vatican II" (Harvard University Press, 2008) sayılabilir.
Ödüller ve onurlar
O'Malley, Katolik tarihi, din kültürü ve teoloji alanında sayısız ödül aldı. Harvard Üniversitesi Sanat Enstitüsü Centennial Madalyası ile ödüllendirildi. Hem Amerika Rönesans Derneği'nin hem de Amerikan Katolik Tarih Derneği'nin Başkanı olarak görev yaptı.
