Yasal düzeyde diplomatik ilişkiler 1958 yılında kuruldu ve daha sonra 1960'ta büyükelçi rütbesine yükseldi. Türkiye, 1962'de Nijerya'nın başkenti Lagos'ta bir büyükelçilik açtı. Türkiye Büyükelçiliği, Nijerya'nın Abuja'yı yeni başkent ilan etmesinden sonra 2001 yılında Abuja'ya taşındı.

Diplomatik İlişkiler
Nijerya İç Savaşı'na kadar Nijerya ve Türkiye çok güçlü ilişkilere sahipti. Bu güçlü ilişki, Nijerya İç Savaşı sırasında zayıfladı.Türkiye iç savaş sırasında tarafsız kaldı ve iki tarafa da silah satmayı reddetti. İlişkiler 1990'ların başında dış politikada yakın işbirliği ile yeniden gelişti.
1990 yazında Irak'ın Kuveyt'i işgaliyle başlayan Körfez krizi sırasında iki ülke işbirliği yaptı. Her iki ülke de BM politikasının aktif bir destekçisi oldu.
