Amerika'nın ünlü oyun yazarlarından olan Simon 1944-1946 yılları arasında New York Üniversitesi ve Denver Üniversitesi'nde eğitim gördü. Warner Brothers'da radyo-tv yazarlığı yapan kardeşiyle birlikte CBS stüdyolarında çalışmaya başladı. İlk oyunu 1961 yılında sahnelendi. Broadway'de kendi adına açılan bir tiyatro sahnesi bulunan yazar, düşündürücü konular içeren, yaşadığı gençlik döneminde insan ilişkileri, güncel yaşam ve evlilik gibi temaları, güldürü biçiminde ele almıştır. Aynı yılda dört ayrı oyununun Broadway'de sahnelenmesi ile rekor kırmıştır. Elaine Joyce (1999), Diane Lander (1990-1998), Marsha Mason (1973-1981) ve Joan Baim (1953-1973) ile dört evlilik yapan Simon birçok ödül sahibidir. Yazar 26 Ağustos 2018'de Manhattan, New York, ABD'de 91 yaşında ölmüştür.
