Allium, Alliaceae familyasına dahil olan ve soğan, sarımsak, pırasa gibi çok bilinen türleri içeren bir bitki cinsidir. İçermiş olduğu 1250 kadar tür ile dünyanın en büyük bitki cinslerinden biri olan Allium, bazı sınıflandırmalarda Liliaceae familyasına dahil edilmiştir. İçerdiği türler çok yıllık ve yumru gövdeli olup, tipik soğan ya da sarımsak koku ve tadını veren kimyasal bileşikler üretirler. Pek çoğu yenilebilir türdür.

Allium türleri esasen kuzey yarı kürenin ılıman iklimlerinde, özellikle doğu Akdeniz'de bulunur. Ancak, gibi Şili'de, gibi Brezilya'da ve gibi Afrika'nın tropik bölgelerinde yetişenler de vardır.
Soğanlar yalnız ya da rizoma eklenmiş küme halindedir. Yapraklar doğrusal ya da eliptik, düz ila silindiriktir. Çiçekler tepede şemsiye halindedir. Birçok türü belirgin sarımsak ya da soğan kokusuna sahiptir.
Cinse tür atamak taksonomik olarak hayli karmaşıktır ve bağlı türlerin taksonomik sınırları net değildir. Bu nedenle toplam tür sayısı asgari 260 ile azami 979'dur ki aradaki fark cinsin zorluğuna işaret eder.
Etimoloji
Cins adı Latince sarımsak demek iken, tip tür adı birlikte kültive edilmiş sarımsak anlamına gelir.
