Peter Lipton

Peter Lipton (9 Ekim 1954 - 25 Kasım 2007), Amerikalı bilim filozofu ve epistemologdur. Kasım 2007'deki beklenmedik ölümüne kadar Cambridge Üniversitesi'nde Hans Rausing Profesörü ve Tarih ve Bilim Felsefesi Bölümü Başkanı ve King's College'ın bir üyesiydi. Cambridge web sitesindeki ölüm ilanına göre, "dünyanın önde gelen bilim filozoflarından ve epistemologlarından biri olarak tanındı."

Kariyeri

Lipton, Wesleyan Üniversitesinde lisans ve Oxford Üniversitesinde yüksek lisans öğrencisiydi. Cambridge'e gelmeden önce Clark University ve Williams College'da ders verdi. Nuffield Biyoetik Konseyi'nin bir üyesiydi ve Farmakogenetik: Etik Sorunlar'ı üreten çalışma grubuna başkanlık etti. panelinde de yer aldı. 2004 yılında Lipton, Royal Society'nin olma onuruna sahipti.

Lipton'un araştırma ilgi alanları, açıklama, çıkarım, test etme, teori değişikliği, doğa yasaları ve bilimsel gerçekçilik gibi konular dahil olmak üzere bilim felsefesine odaklanmıştır. Lipton'un bilim felsefesi alanındaki araştırması, onu felsefenin diğer ilgili alanlarında çalışmaya yöneltti; epistemolojide, Lipton aynı zamanda tümevarım ve tanıklık felsefesini de araştırdı. Aynı şekilde zihin felsefesinde Lipton, zihinsel içerik ve zihin-beden problemi kavramlarını araştırdı.

Nuffield Biyoetik Konseyi'nin (2003–2007) bir üyesiydi.

Hayatı

Lipton, karısı Diana ve iki oğlu Jonah ve Jacob ile birlikte yaşıyordu. Kendini "dindar ateist" ve "ilerici bir Yahudi" olarak tarif ediyordu; Yahudi bir yaşam tarzının geleneklerini ve kültürünü takip edebileceğini ve Yahudiliğin öğretilerini, aynı anda böyle bir dinin metafiziğine (Tanrı'nın varlığı gibi) inanmadan, hayattaki ahlaki sorunların üstesinden gelmesine yardımcı olmak için kullanabileceğini savundu.

25 Kasım 2007'de Lipton, squash oynadıktan sonra ölümcül bir kalp krizi geçirdi. Ardından Profesör John Forrester Cambridge Üniversitesinde Tarih ve Bilim Felsefesi Bölüm Başkanlığı görevini üstlendi.
